Porn domain pioneer Stuart Lawley has died unexpectedly

Postby Research » Thu 12. Dec 2024, 10:01

Stuart Lawley, former CEO of the .xxx administrator ICM Registry, has died at the age of 61. Lawley was originally from the UK, but moved to the USA and became a naturalised citizen. He became known for his fight for the introduction of the red light domain .xxx, which was given the green light in 2011. Lawley already seemed to have failed; in 2007, the ICANN board decided against its introduction by a vote of 9:5. At the time, ICANN officially stated that it had been unable to dispel concerns about the introduction of offensive content, especially as the international legal situation regarding the creation of a porn domain was unclear and risky. Such concerns have long been a thing of the past, as the introduction of .adult, .porn and .sex has shown - Lawley paved the way for this. There are currently around 45,000 .xxx domains registered. Fears that governments would forcibly ban all adult content under .xxx have never materialised. On the other hand, .xxx has also benefited massively from defensive registrations as brand owners feared damage to their brand image. Lawley is survived by his mother and a sister. He also had a son, Sabian Lawley; he died in a hit-and-run accident, the case of which is still unsolved.
