Bangladesh is concerned about its own country extension .bd

Postby Research » Thu 25. Jul 2024, 11:31

Over 172 million inhabitants, almost one million registered domain names, but only around 41,000 of them with the country's own abbreviation - Bangladesh's .bd has still not really caught on with its own population some 25 years after its delegation. The Bangladeshi daily newspaper "The Business Standard" has tried to get to the bottom of the reasons in a recent article and names two reasons. The first is the subdomain structure; there are no second level domains such as dhaka.bd, but users have to switch to dhaka.com.bd, dhaka.net.bd or dhaka.info.bd, which is not particularly lucrative compared to domains under .com or .net. The second is the registry Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Ltd (BTCL), which is under state administration and is unpopular due to its poor service. But there is also light at the end of the tunnel: the increasing use of the Internet promises potential; above all, however, the national domain registration and maintenance services are to be opened up, according to Md Mohiuddin Ahmed from the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC). Last but not least, the outflow of foreign currency appears to be a major concern for the government; it has therefore extended the tax exemption for the ICT sector by three years in the latest Finance Act.
