Belgium's .be fights against online child abuse

Postby Research » Thu 20. Feb 2025, 09:12

DNS Belgium, administrator of the Belgian country code extension .be, is taking even more decisive action against the abuse of children on the Internet. The registry has committed to using the “Domain Alert” services of the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). Specifically, this involves two services, the TLD Hopping List and Domain Alerts. On the TLD Hopping List, the IWF lists websites with images and videos of child sexual abuse that are registered under at least three top-level domains. In this case, there is a suspicion that the domain owner will activate their website under a different ending (TLD hopping) as soon as the website with the active ending is deactivated. If the website is already listed under .be, DNS Belgium can check the holder; if not, the registration triggers a check. With the Domain Alert service, the registry receives notifications when a .be domain is detected that is linked to websites containing CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) content. “Registrars and registries play an essential role in combating the spread of child sexual abuse images and videos,” says Nel Broothaerts from DNS Belgium. “Last year, we noted a 32% increase in reports through our helpline compared to the previous year. It's clear that we need to step up our efforts in Belgium.”
