For Eesti Interneti Sihtasutus (EIS), administrator of the Estonian country code extension .ee, the release of domains with only one character via auction has paid off. The highest price was achieved by e.ee, which went to the highest bidder out of a total of 12 bidders for EUR 220,000. However, s.ee at EUR 43,000 and i.ee for EUR 23,000 also fetched respectable prices. A total of 464 bids were submitted, with a large proportion coming from Estonians; however, participants from other countries such as China, South Korea, the United Kingdom, Kazakhstan, Germany and the United States were also actively involved in the auction. International bidders were mainly interested in the one-character domains under .ee. Overall, the registry describes the auction of reserved domains as a success. Estonian place names offered many locals and companies memorable domains to showcase their activities. At the same time, the one-character domains have increased the global visibility of the .ee domain. The proceeds from the auction will be invested in improving the security and efficiency of .ee. The Estonian Internet Foundation also uses them to support projects that promote knowledge about the Internet in society.
