In future, the UDRP can be used for disputes of .cv domains

The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) is expanding its range of out-of-court dispute resolution procedures for country code extensions. Since October 2024, WIPO has also been the only arbitration tribunal to accept disputes over domain names ending in .cv from the African island state of Cape Verde. The decision is based on the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP), the UDRP Rules and the WIPO Supplemental Rules; the procedure for a .cv domain is therefore no different from a UDRP procedure for a generic top-level domain. The procedure has come at the right time: thanks to a partnership with the US-based OlaCV, .cv domains have recently become available via numerous well-known registrars worldwide. The abbreviation ‘CV’ is mainly used in English-speaking countries for ‘curriculum vitae’, i.e. curriculum vitae. Therefore, .cv aims to create an ecosystem around digital identities, profiles and references. Brand owners should therefore keep a watchful eye on further developments and consider preventive registrations.
