The Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA), registry of the country extension .kw (Kuwait), has launched the first phase of registration of domains directly below the country extension .kw. The period, known as the “Sunrise Period”, lasts six months and offers owners of registered trademarks and subdomains below .com.kw, .net.kw and org.kw the opportunity to register the short equivalent under .kw. Manal Al-Mazyad, Director of CITRA's Public Sector Governance Department, urged all eligible persons to visit the authority's official website for details on the registration policy and procedure for registering domains during the sunrise period. CITRA has not yet announced when the second and third phases will start and which registration requirements will apply in each case. The registration requirements for domains directly below .kw are somewhat hidden on the registry website: “general use domain for Kuwait nationals and expatriated residents”; this indicates that a local domicile or Kuwaiti nationality is required to register a .kw domain. The number of officially accredited domain registrars remains low at just five.
