The Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC), registry of the Taiwanese country code extension .tw, is going international: from 5 November 2024, it will be possible to register one-character .tw domains with characters in the national language - the standard variety of Mandarin. The launch will take place in two parts. It will start with a landrush phase that will run from 5 to 19 November 2024, followed by a short break until the general registration phase on 22 November 2024. The allocation follows the principle of ‘first come, first served’. Any domestic or foreign company, any legal entity (provided it is legally registered) and any natural person can apply for registration. Registration takes place directly below .tw at the second level domain level. The increased fees in the landrush phase are only due once; the usual fees then apply in subsequent years. In the event of any legal infringements, the ‘TWNIC Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy’ and the ‘Rules for the TWNIC Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy’ apply, both of which are based on the UDRP.
