.us is working on its future

Postby Research » Thu 20. Feb 2025, 09:11

The US National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has launched a “Market Research Request for Information” (RFI) on the future of the .us country code extension. The NTIA is looking for innovative approaches for more stability and security in the Domain Name System, the containment of DNS abuse, the enforcement of the usTLD Nexus Policy and data protection-friendly access to the registration data of domain holders. The Nexus Policy requires a connection between the domain holder and the United States when registering a .us domain. Some organizations such as the M3AAWG (Messaging, Malware and Mobile Anti-Abuse Working Group) have made their responses public. They essentially propose maintaining the status quo with regard to the administration of .us. .us is critical national infrastructure and has the potential to generate over US$100 million in new revenue over the course of the next registry contract. It is still unclear how .us will develop under the old and new President Donald Trump; there have been no public announcements to date, but at least a renaming is considered unlikely.
