According to a report by the French brand protection company IP Twins, the Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CONATEL), administrator of the .ve (Venezuela) country code extension, is preparing a significant relaxation of the registration rules. CONATEL has announced that it will open up the registration of domains directly below .ve specifically for brand owners. The new regulation aims to favour companies and individuals with verified brands and ensure that their brands are protected in the digital space. Previously, they had to switch to one of the numerous official subdomains such as .co.ve, .com.ve, .info.ve or .web.ve. Direct registration under .ve simplifies the process and offers a shorter, more memorable and potentially more marketable web address. Official confirmation of this from CONATEL has not yet been received; the registry website under nic.ve is currently in maintenance mode, which is why no commercial services are being offered. According to IP Twins, the opening is currently focussed exclusively on brand owners; however, the registry could open .ve on a broader basis in the future.
