The Paris-based and internationally active leather goods company Lancaster has got rid of its trademark extension. In a letter dated January 8, 2025, the French company terminated the Registry Agreement (RA) with the Internet registry ICANN for .lancaster. As is usual with .brands, the termination is based on Section 4.4 (b) of the RA, which allows ordinary termination at any time subject to a notice period of 180 days. The company did not provide further details on the motives for its termination, but was emphatically polite: “We appreciate the collaboration over the term of this agreement and wish ICANN continued success.” .lancaster was delegated, i.e. registered in the root zone, on July 9, 2015; at its peak, eleven domains were registered, currently there are still seven. Apart from .lancaster, Lancaster does not operate any other domain extensions. ICANN has decided not to transfer the top-level domain to any other registry for the time being. However, .lancaster also has geographical significance, including in relation to the port city of the same name in the northwest of England. It cannot be ruled out that an application will now be considered there.
