Google enters the market with .channel

Postby Research » Thu 23. Jan 2025, 20:51

Charleston Road Registry Inc., which belongs to Google, is launching a new generic top-level domain, .channel. After a “Limited Registration Period”, which runs until February 3, 2025, the “Early Access Period” will start on February 4, 2025 and end on February 11, 2025; during this phase, anyone can register .channel domains at steadily decreasing premium fees. It will lead seamlessly into the free availability phase. The .channel extension is “built for creators”: creative professionals and publishers should use it to set up their online stores, sell digital and physical products and thus get in touch with their target group. The focus is therefore on content monetization: “Whether you're still building your audience or you're ready to sell digital or physical products, let .channel be your storefront”, according to the marketing documents. Google also advertises security; thanks to an HSTS default setting, .channel should ensure that all websites use secure HTTPS connections. The fees for .channel domains are likely to be slightly higher than those for .com domains, and promotions are also expected.
