.internal will not be available under any circumstances

The internet administration ICANN has officially blocked the character string .internal from any future use. At a meeting of the ICANN Board of Directors on 29 July 2024, it was decided that "the Board reserves .INTERNAL from delegation in the DNS root zone permanently to provide for its use in private-use applications." At the same time, the ICANN Board recommended that efforts be made to raise public awareness of the reservation. ICANN is thus implementing a recommendation made by the Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) in September 2020. The committee, which specialises in the security and integrity of the domain name system, had proposed reserving a label that is not currently delegated and will not be delegated in the future. With .internal, there will therefore be a character string in future that will remain reserved in a similar way to private IP addresses. Network administrators who were previously unable to use a domain extension for their private or internal purposes will now have secure access to .internal. However, those interested in a new top level domain will still not be able to apply for .internal in the future.
