France's AFNIC looks at the advantages of blockchain domains

Thu 11. Jul 2024, 12:24

Does the blockchain system have the potential to replace the Domain Name System (DNS)? The .fr registry AFNIC explored this question in its 14-page report "Could blockchain (really) replace DNS?". It aims to provide food for thought on the need for further development of the DNS as well as an overview of the advantages of blockchain with regard to various aspects (user-friendliness, resilience, centralization and regulation, energy consumption). The DNS is not without its flaws; its structure is said to be vulnerable to cyberattacks, and it also harbors the risk of censorship and is vulnerable in terms of confidentiality. In contrast, the blockchain offers decentralization, security, protection against censorship and confidentiality. However, blockchain-based namespaces are themselves susceptible to a certain form of centralization. In the case of ENS (Ethereum Name Service), for example, Amazon hosts more than two thirds of the nodes in the network. In contrast, the vast majority of players in the DNS are subject to transparent regulations, which are set either by ICANN or by a national legal and regulatory framework that also takes into account the multi-stakeholder approach. Anyone interested in the Web3 will find a balanced compilation of arguments in this report; only time will tell what result they will lead to.
